If the classic E-Sumi set focuses on the darkness of shadows, the Boku-Undo E-Sumi Mei (Bright) celebrates the vibrancy of colours without losing the enigmatic soul of Japan. Manufactured in Nara by the bicentennial Boku-Undo, this set was designed for artists looking for rich, luminous and saturated colours, but infused with the traditional black sumi ink base (natural soot).
On paper, the result is a poetic contrast: juicy and vibrant colours that carry dark and mysterious undertones at their base.
Vivid Saturation with the Color-Splitting Effect
The Mei line is famous for its unique pigment separation capability. When you apply plenty of water or use fluid techniques, the bright coloured pigment expands energetically, while the black micro-particles of sumi ink settle on the paper, creating organic contours and automatic three-dimensional shading. It's the perfect encounter between chromatic modernity and ancient Japanese tradition.
As with the classic line, Boku-Undo uses traditional manufacturing formulations that combine the base of natural soot (carbon black) with highly saturated organic dyes and high-quality mineral pigments. For this reason, standardized ASTM codes are not used on the packaging, but rather factory codes and traditional Japanese nomenclatures (Toumei, Kimei, etc.).
