Boku-Undo Shadow Black Watercolours 6 Colours

Explore your creations with the depth and mystery of Japan's most enigmatic watercolours.
Forget, for a moment, conventional Western watercolours. The Boku-Undo E-Sumi (Classic) set offers an artistic experience completely different from anything you've ever tried! Made in Nara, Japan, by the legendary Boku-Undo brand, which has preserved traditional manufacturing methods for over 200 years, these gansai watercolours combine colour pigments with an authentic base of black sumi ink (natural soot).
The result? Dark, deep, atmospheric, and smoky tones that evoke the timeless aesthetic of Japanese scroll paintings and classical calligraphy.
The Magical Effect: Colour-Splitting
The true magic of these watercolours happens when you add water. Thanks to the molecular density of natural soot, the black particles of the sumi ink subtly separate from the coloured pigments when very diluted or worked with the wet-on-wet technique. This creates automatic two-tone gradients, organic granulated textures, and a fantastic three-dimensionality that you cannot replicate with common paints.
Since Boku-Undo uses traditional Japanese methods in manufacturing their paints, combining natural soot (carbon black) with standard dyes and pigments, they do not list standardized ASTM pigment codes (such as PB29 or PY150) on their packaging. Instead, the specific and patented chemical composition is listed below, along with the documented results of third-party lightfastness tests:

Colour Name (English) Official Colour No. Pigment(s) / Composition Base Lightfastness
Reddish Black (Reddish Black) E03 Carbon soot + Fugitive Red dye Low (Prone to fading under direct light)
Yellowish Black (Yellowish Black) E04 Carbon soot + Organic Yellow pigment High (Excellent permanence)
Greenish Black (Greenish Black) E05 Carbon soot + Organic Green pigment High (Excellent permanence)
Bluish Black (Bluish Black) E06 Carbon soot + Ultramarine Blue base High (Excellent permanence / Granulating)
Purplish Black (Purplish Black) E07 Carbon soot + Ultramarine Blue + Fugitive Red dye Moderate-Low (Red tones fade, leaving blue-gray)
Brownish Black (Brownish Black) E08 Carbon soot + Iron Oxide / Brown pigment High (Excellent permanence)
Product Highlights:
  • Genuine Sumi Ink Base: Each color carries the soul of Japanese calligraphy, ensuring a velvety, matte (non-reflective) finish.
  • Dark and Poetic Palette: Six modified black shades (Reddish, Yellowish, Greenish, Bluish, Purplish, and Brownish) perfect for creating misty landscapes, dramatic shadows, mysterious backgrounds, or gothic botanical illustrations.
  • Large Gansai Style Pans: Presented in wide, shallow plastic trays, ideal for accommodating large calligraphy brushes without damaging the bristles.
  • Japanese Craftsmanship Heritage: An original product imported directly from Japan, developed by master artisans.
How to Use for Best Effect:
While they perform well on heavy western watercolor paper, these inks reach their full potential on absorbent and fibrous papers like Washi paper or rice paper, where pigment separation and granulation become even more pronounced.
Be inspired with a touch of Japanese tradition and drama!
